To Add a New Blog Entry

Last updated 28/08/23

Firstly, blog entries are called ‘Posts’ not ‘Pages’!

  • Log into your WordPress Admin
  • From the ‘Dashboard’, click the ‘Posts’ tab in the left navigation
  • (It will help to look at an existing post first so go to ‘All Posts’ then click on one of the blog items available)
  • Once you are ready to start, click the ‘Add New’ sub-tab which will bring up a new blank ‘post’ page
  • Start filling in the blanks:
    • ‘Add title’ – this will be the main title for your blog post so keep it fairly short
    • Enter your main story/text into the large editing box below the title section
    • Select the ‘Blog’ category or categories on the right hand side under ‘Categories’ (this is very important – if this is not selected, it will not show up on the main Blog page)
  • Ignore all other sections – you can add tags which are similar to keywords but sometimes this can be detrimental to the search engines rather than improving it – I would suggest leaving these as WordPress will add it’s own ‘tags’
  • Click the ‘Save Draft’ button the right to save your work so far
  • Adding Images
    • Go back to the large text box and at the end of the body of text, place the cursor and then press the space bar to move to the next line
    • Click the ‘Add Media’ button above the box
    • Click the ‘Upload files’ tab under ‘Add Media’ then the ‘Select files’ button
    • Locate the image file on your computer and click the button
    • This will then bring it up in the media library – just click the ‘Insert into Post’ button bottom right
    • To align or resize the image to suit, click on the image in the main text box and then click the ‘Edit’ (pencil icon) link which appears
    • Set the alignment which is generally best suited to centred
    • Choose from the size options – full size is generally best unless it is a huge image! WordPress will resize it to fit the screen
    • Enter the ‘Alternative text’ in the first box – this is a short description of the image that the search engines will pick up (e.g ‘Our decision’)
    • Click the ‘Update’ button to save any changes
  • When you are ready, click the ‘Publish’ button on the right – this will make your blog post live on the website
  • Go to your ‘Blog’ page on the live website (I always open up a separate window to view both at the same time) and you should see the new entry in the first position – click on this to view the full article
  • If you need to make any changes, just go back to the page in edit mode, update the page and click the ‘Update’ button each time
